EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING ages—the effect of both time and weather. Contrary to the marketing hype which emphasizes youth and newness, I find real beauty in that evolutionary process. There is a richness in both physical and spiritual maturity which I find much more interesting than the easy lure of shiny new surfaces or temporal youth. By contrast these are pieces which have lived and experienced and matured. Like people, they become more interesting with time.

I have always been awed by the beauty of nature and am simultaneously intrigued by its power. Because I am human, white and from the United States, I live in a world where I see my fellow humans expecting to have control of anything they wish. I like the fact that nature is one of the few elements that can diminish that power, making me remember that we are only part of what is important on the planet. I see this principle surfacing in the production of my work; no matter how carefully and completely I design an image, ultimately nature intercedes and modifies my plan. This comes as both a joy and a frustration, and is a truly humbling experience.
